Description
These two large stone sit only a few meters from an ancient
track way, now forming part of both the Pennine Way and St.
Cuthbert's Way. The stone are irregular and angular and not
marked on recent or older Ordnance Survey maps of the area.
Directions
From Kirk Yetholm follow narrow minor road up steep hill with
passing places. Immediately after road drops down to valley
floor, turn left into large grassed parking area. On foot,
follow sign posted footpath marked Pennine Way, ascending Green
Humbleton. Do not follow the valley floor route. The stones can
be seen immediately left of the path nearing the top of the hill.
Parking
A large off-road parking area is available but can be busy
during holidays. Take care not to block access for farm
vehicles.
Fieldnotes
As with another nearby entry, 081
Stone, these two stones stand out in the landscape. When
most of the loose stones in the area have found their way into
the dry stone wall that forms the present day Border between
Scotland and England, it seems odd that two readily workable
stones should still survive. It is likely that these two stones
are simple that, just two stones. However, there are two
important standing stones, 058
Stob Stanes, hidden out of sight not far away and these
stone are well placed to serve as a marker for those seeking the
Stob Stanes.
