Description
One of a pair of Clyde-type chambered cairns, Cairnholy I is
located near the farm of the same name just off the A75 between
Gatehouse of Fleet and Creetown in Dumfries and Galloway.
Cairnholy I is the larger and too many, the most impressive of
the two at this site. A small chamber can be seen and although
the original capstone is missing this is more than made up for
by the magnificent stone facade. The site has been excavated and
a number of finds can be seen at the Royal Museum of Scotland in
Edinburgh.
Directions
The site is signposted from the A75 between Gatehouse of Fleet and
Newton Stewart. Follow the very narrow, single track road until
the cairns are reached.
Parking
There is parking for a few cars at Cairnholy I.
Fieldnotes
Despite being heavily robbed of its stonework, this chambered
cairn is still impressive. That is if you are able to get the
place to yourself and it very much forms part of the local
tourist circuit. At the time of my visit two other parties were
in attendance and the noise and cigarette smoke did not add to
the ambience of the site. A second chambered cairn, Cairnholy
II, can be seen about 150m further along the farm track.
