036 Cairn, Cairnpapple Hill, Torphichen.
The summit of Cairnpapple Hill boasts a fine burial cairn and
henge and is in the care of Historic Scotland. The site has a
variety of features including burial cists, a henge bank and
ditches and graves. Of interest here are an impressive ring of
stone kerbs around the large burial cairn as well as various
large stones used in the first burial. There is a small charge
to enter this location.
The site can be found a few miles north of Bathgate and is well
sign-posted. There is a small admission charge to enter the inner
chamber. The remained of the site is open all year round.
Parking is available on site.
Cairnpapple Hill is well known locally as an ideal
location for skywatching by UFO enthusiasts and is also in
an area known to be a "hot spot" for UFO sightings
with a famous close encounter on nearby Dechmont Law, some 4
miles to the east. The area around Cairnpapple is also
reputed to be haunted by the Silver Man, a mysterious being
who can apparently run over 50 miles per hour!
Cairnpapple is a place where you need peace and solitude to
spend some time alone. When you are surrounded by other visitors
it's still an amazing structure but it's not quite the same.
Another trip is planned.
