063 Glacial Erratic, Harbour, Musselburgh.

Prev | Next

Description
This large glacial erratic can be found in a small grassed area immediately to the north of the service station opposite Musselburgh harbour, to the east of Edinburgh. The stone is over 2.00 metres long and around 0.60 metres high.

Directions
The stone can be found just off the A199 in Musselburgh. Follow the signs for the harbour. The stone is located between the harbour and the service station.

Parking
Ample parking is available in and around the harbour area.

Fieldnotes
Having been unable to find any further information relating to this stone, my best guess is that it was found during excavation work when the service station was constructed, perhaps being unearthed when the fuel storage tanks were installed. There are no records of the stone on RCAHMS and old maps of the area also show nothing of interest. It may have been easier to use the stone as part of the local landscaping rather than dispose of it.
