Description
This natural rock pinnacle stands proud from the surrounding
bedrock on the foreshore between Seacliff beach and a large
rocky island known as The Gegan. It reaches a height of approx.
2.50 metres above the base rock and has an unusual shape, rather
like a man standing with his arms folded.
Directions
This location is situated off the A198 road between Dunbar and
North Berwick. Leave the road at Auldhame and follow the
direction signs for the beach. Note that the rock is located
within the tidal zone.
Parking
There is parking at the head of Seacliff beach, accessed along a
private road from the Auldhame farm, on the A198 from North
Berwick. There is a £2.00 change for parking here and access is
controlled by an automatic barrier.
Folklore
The only point of interest I been able to unearth is
that the area has considerable association with St Baldred, an
8th Century hermit and monk who once resided in the aptly named
"St Baldred's Cave" situated behind Seacliff beach. He
also lived on the Bass Rock, a massive rocky island clearly
visible from this location. Legend also records that he was able
to move rocks by prayer alone. Clearly a man of unusual capabilities
Fieldnotes
Having scoured old maps of the area and finding nothing of
interest, at least relating to the rock formation, it would appear that this small pinnacle does not even
have a name. Hopefully, further research may provide
additional information.
