Prev | Next |
Description
A large single boulder measuring about 1.00 metre on each side,
situated on the western side of Chesters Iron Age hill fort near
Haddington in East Lothian. The stone appears to be a glacial
erratic and different from the local bedrock.
Directions
From Haddington, follow a minor road north towards Drem. The
location is sign-posted about 1 mile before Drem.
Parking
There is parking for three vehicles on site.
Fieldnotes
I noticed the stone at this location while recording some video
footage for one of my "Gary on the Ground" videos on Youtube. The question that often arises with
a stone such as this
is why it has survived all these years? Massive quantities of
stone, turf and earth would have been required for the
construction of the hill fort itself. I'm amazed that it's still there! Of course, it may
simply be a "rubbing stone"
placed there by the local land-owner for their stock to relieve
the odd itch or two?
